Malana Joseph Mitchell is highlighted in the top 40 for PRWeek’s 2017 Champions of PR. Each year PR Week recognizes 40 women that excel in the communications and public relations industry. Mitchell is ranked among prominent CEOs and Presidents from around the country.
A native of Edgard, La., Mitchell received her Bachelor’s in Mass Communication from Dillard University and her Master’s in Journalism and Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations from Kent State University. As an award-winning public relations specialist, she has dedicated more than 13 years of her professional life to journalism, media, event planning and public relations.
In 2005, Mitchell began her career as a Mayoral Fellow in New Orleans City Government where she assisted the administration to manage crisis communications in post-Katrina New Orleans. Following her time in city government, Mitchell served as communications specialist for Georges Enterprises, LLC, one of the largest private employers in Louisiana, where she designed and distributed all e-marketing campaigns for the company.
Currently, Mitchell serves as the Director of PR and Community Engagement at Spears Group where she develops and executes strategic communications strategies and manages media relations for high-profile clients, including the National Basketball Association (NBA), Lemonade Day Louisiana, the National Urban League and more. Mitchell also serves as an adjunct professor at Dillard University.
Over the years, Mitchell has been actively involved in a variety of noteworthy organizations including the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau’s PR Council, the National Association of Black Journalists and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Mitchell serves as a role model for her team at Spears Group and other communications professionals both locally and nationwide. Spears Group is honored to have her recognized as one of the top 40 in PRWeek’s Champions of PR.
